Forest Characteristics

Since the 1930s the Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) research unit of the Forest Service has monitored the forests of the North Central Region. Using FIA data, we have developed a series of slide shows that depict changes in Area of Forest, Tree Volume on Timberland, Forest Ownership, Tree Size Class, Oak Decline, and Oak Mortality.

Changes in the Area of Forest and Tree Size Class are mapped for All Forest Type Groups and for each of the five major Forest Type Groups in the Region. Changes in Tree Volume are mapped for “All Live and Dead” and “Growing Stock” on both public and private timberland. And, changes in Timberland Ownership are mapped for public and private holdings.

To continue, select one of the Forest Characteristics slide shows by clicking on the links above or access them from the scroll bar on the left side of this page.
