Of all the special places in the North
Central Region, perhaps the one most often spoken of by
Midwesterners is the magical place we call "The Northwoods,"or
more simply "Up North."
Each summer and fall, anglers, hunters, and outdoor enthusiasts
of all kinds from within the Region and across the Nation spend
tens of thousands of visitor days "Up North." While
many of these visitors stay in hotels or other temporary quarters,
seasonal housing units are becoming more and more common.
This slide show is comprised of maps that depict changes in
the overall number and density of seasonal housing units between
1980 and 2000. Change was calculated at the county level using
U.S. Census data (Radeloff
et.al., 2000).
Note: In general, seasonal housing units are living quarters
that are held for weekend or other occasional use throughout
the year - second homes may or may not be classified as seasonal
