The Northern Cardinal is unmistakable among midwestern birds, especially the male, with its bright red plumage, distinctive crest, and red bill. It is a permanent resident that breeds in successional-scrub habitat. It is a ground or low nesting bird with a diet consisting mostly of seeds and fruit.
